Do not fear transitioning from your practice!

I hesitate to use the term 'retirement' since that should be the last thought on your mind when transitioning from active practice. I left my practice almost 12 years ago and now find myself busier than ever and very content with my lifestyle.

I strongly recommend developing a well thought out plan on how you perceive spending these years ahead. I began about a year before I knew I would be leaving my practice primarily due to chronic back issues. My current lease was expiring, and I felt this move was in my best interest if I was to enjoy life without any physical handicap.

During the year I found volunteering at a non-profit to be very rewarding. I also became more involved with my homeowner association board. I now have many neighbors I call my friends. One of my primary focuses has been participating on DCDS committees. I have led several of them, which has kept me in touch with our Society and with many of my colleagues. I have also redeveloped my joy of reading as well as continuing my love of cooking and bread baking. The latter has its benefit both in being creative and being satisfied after a good meal.

Many of you have developed other interests involving your place of worship, non-profits or sharing time with family and friends at a ranch, farm or lake home. Many are golfers and tennis or pickleball players as well as enjoying hunting or fishing.

This time of your life should be greeted with positive thoughts and a sense of optimism that will leave you with a feeling of joy and gratitude.
